The Kanata Stump Grinding Situation
Older-neighbourhood silver maple and ash — Kanata's established areas have significant populations of mature silver maple and white ash (now largely dead from EAB). Ash stumps that have been in the ground for 2–5 years are extremely hard. They still grind — our commercial equipment handles them — but they take more passes than fresh wood. We assess species and condition when quoting.
Emerald Ash Borer impact — the EAB wiped out most of Kanata's white ash trees. If you have an ash stump from a tree removed in the past 5+ years, the wood has had significant time to harden. These are some of the most challenging grinds we encounter — but they're routine for us.
Manitoba maple — common throughout Kanata, particularly in older areas. These stumps must be ground to proper depth or they will send up root suckers. We never under-grind Manitoba maple.
New Kanata North and Fernbank — newer west Kanata communities have younger construction-era stumps that are much softer and faster to grind. These are typically smaller diameter jobs (10–18 inches) done in under 20 minutes.
