Stump Grinding in Ottawa — The Complete Guide
If you've got a stump in your Ottawa yard, stump grinding is almost certainly the fastest and least invasive way to deal with it. Grinding removes the visible stump and destroys the root system down to below ground level — leaving you with a flat, workable surface and no trace the tree was ever there.
Stickman Stump Removal provides professional stump grinding across all of Ottawa. Here's everything you need to know before booking.
What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding uses a commercial rotary grinder — a machine with a spinning cutting wheel fitted with carbide-tipped teeth — to reduce a tree stump to wood chips and sawdust. Unlike full stump extraction (which digs out the entire root ball), grinding leaves the roots in place but destroys the stump to a depth that prevents regrowth and eliminates the hazard above ground.
The result: a level area filled with fresh wood chips that you can rake flat, cover with topsoil, and seed or sod right away.
How the Stump Grinding Process Works
Assessment — we look at the stump size, wood species, access, and any obstacles like interlock, fences, or garden beds near the stump.
Setup — our commercial grinder is positioned at the stump. Commercial grinding machines run 60–100+ HP — dramatically more powerful than the rental machines you can get at Home Depot. They cut faster, deeper, and cleaner.
Grinding — the cutting wheel passes back and forth across the stump, reducing it inch by inch. We work down to 6 inches below grade as standard — deep enough for seeding, sodding, or most landscaping, and deep enough that no regrowth is possible.
Chips — as we grind, the stump becomes wood chips. You can leave them in the depression (they decompose into excellent organic matter), or we can remove them for an additional fee.
Cleanup — the area is raked level. You're left with a flat, chip-filled depression ready for your next step.
A typical Ottawa stump takes 15–60 minutes to grind depending on diameter, species, and access.

Ottawa Tree Species — What Each Grinds Like
Different Ottawa trees grind at very different speeds. Here's what to expect:
Silver Maple — Ottawa's most common tree. Relatively fast grinding, but often has large surface root flare that we grind as part of the standard job. Fresh silver maple grinds quickly; older dried maple takes more passes.
Manitoba Maple — grinds at medium speed. The critical issue: Manitoba maple resprouts aggressively from roots if the stump isn't ground to sufficient depth. We always go to full 6-inch minimum on Manitoba maple — do not leave even 2 inches of stump above grade on this species.
White Ash (post-EAB) — Emerald Ash Borer effectively wiped out Ottawa's ash tree population. Ash stumps from recent-ish removals may be partially or fully dried — dry ash is extremely hard and takes significantly more grinding passes. We account for this when quoting.
Norway Maple — common in older Ottawa suburbs. Dense wood, moderate grinding speed. Often has a large root flare at grade.
Norway Spruce and Blue Spruce — common in 1980s-era Kanata, Nepean, and Gloucester properties. Moderate grinding speed; extensive lateral surface roots to address.
Black Walnut — dense wood, slower grinding. Note: walnut chips should not be used as garden mulch — they contain juglone, which is toxic to many plants. We recommend removing walnut chips rather than leaving them.
2022 Derecho Stumps in Ottawa
The May 2022 derecho knocked down thousands of trees across Barrhaven, Kanata, Nepean, and Orleans. Many homeowners dealt with the trees immediately but left the stumps. If your stump is 3+ years old from the derecho, it's had time to partially dry — which in most cases means faster grinding. Call us and we'll assess by species.
What to Do After Stump Grinding
1. The wood chips in the depression can be left as-is — they'll decompose into organic matter over 1–2 years
2. Or rake them aside, fill with topsoil, and seed or sod immediately
3. For Manitoba maple: cover the chip area with topsoil promptly to prevent root suckers from finding light
4. The grinding kills the root system — no treatment needed
